Massimo Tartarini, president and CEO of the motorcycle company Italjet, first visited the Philippines more than a year ago. He had two reasons to be here to check out a local dealership, and to relax in Boracay. Both objectives were accomplished, and the trip left an indelible mark on Tartarini. It wouldn’t be surprising if we were to hear him sing the praises of Boracay. What made a stronger impression on him, though, was the big scooter market in our country, and the demand even for premium brands like Italjet. He also discovered that there’s a growing community of Italjet enthusiasts here, all wanting to see the iconic Dragster in metal. Presently, local motorcycle dealership Access Plus is importing only the Italjet Formula 150cc from Italy. But Pinoy scooterists are reportedly clamoring for the Dragster. Their long wait might be over soon. Tartarini unveiled the new-generation Dragster at the recent EICMA motorcycle show in Milan. Sporting a mean, radical design, the latest model comes in 125cc and 200cc variants. With its steel trellis frame widely exposed, this Dragster features space-shuttle-inspired looks, making it appear like it’s built to conquer Mars. What makes this new model more appealing than its predecessors is the stylish yet aerodynamic fascia and the sleek tail-end design. These only show that Italjet’s designers have put in a lot of effort when they conceptualized the new scooter. With bigger tires 12-inch/13-inch front and rear, the Dragster looks heavy at first glance, but it actually weighs only 108kg for the 125cc variant and 112kg for the 200cc version. The engine four-stroke, four-valve, liquid-cooled and suspension parts are interchangeable with those on the past models, so maintenance will be less of an issue now, according to the Italjet boss. Moreover, the Dragster’s engine is the twin version that powers the retro-inspired Aprilia Scomadi. The new Dragster is set to hit the production line soon and may already be available on the international market by May or June 2019. They immediately drew so much attention from members of the Pinoy motorcycle community, who wanted to know when these iconic scooters will hit the local market. The clamor is so strong that it must have reached Italy. Because now, Access Plus, authorized local distributor of Italjet scooters, has announced on social media that it’s already accepting orders of the new Dragster for the Philippine market. Access Plus has confirmed the arrival of the new Italjet scooter by mid-2019. Asked if both the 125cc and 200cc variants will be made available here, company president and CEO Toti Alberto replied “I think 200cc lang.” The estimated selling price is P200,000, he added. Was he kidding? That's a real bargain for a scooter with very aggressive styling. Alberto clarified that the variant that’s landing on our shores is Asian made.’ The price of the Dragster 125cc and 200cc in Italy ranges from 4,500 to 4,800 euros, respectively. In Philippine currency, that’s almost P300,000. First launched in 1993, the Dragster is now making its comeback after production was stopped in 2003. The new model’s radical styling drew cheers from netizens, who can’t wait to see Italjet’s latest baby in the metal. Italjet injects some fun into short commutes with its new Dragster. The new model puts a radical new spin on its Dragster small scooter with very aggressive styling. The scooter makes use of sharp angles, trellis frames, and styling cues typical of a showbike rather than a daily commuter. Just like the original Dragster, first launched in 1998 and discontinued in 2003, the new Dragstar features RAAD forkless front suspension, a water-cooled single-cylinder engine, and wide tires. This time, the Dragster will be offered with either 125cc or 200cc engines. Both appear to be Aprilia/Rotax-derived four-valve engiens. They will be paired with an automatic dry centrifugal clutch with a continuously variable transmission. The 125cc makes 15-Hp while the 200cc produces 20-Hp. Keeping it aloft will be a adjustable springs, linked with disc brakes with ABS on the 200cc. They will roll on 120mm 70R12 tires in front and 150mm 70R13 tires in the rear. Itcame to the US about 20 years ago. I had the chance to own a 2002 4 stroke Italjet 180 I bought from a California Vespa dealer in 2002 and I rode a 50cc that a motorcycle shop had in Austin. The Holy Grail was the 2 stroke 180 cc though. They are rare. The Dragster is making a comeback as a 125 cc with 15HP and weighs 240 pounds.
